Why MOT and Service together?

If you are looking to get your car serviced, then it would be convenient to also get an MOT completed as well. At National Tyres and Autocare, we recommend that a Full Service is conducted every 12 months (or 12,000 miles). We recommend that a Major service is conducted every other year, in place of a Full Service. The Major service includes all areas covered in a Full service plus we change parts recommended for replacement every two years including a brake fluid change and a cabin filter replacement. It is a legal requirement that you take your car for an MOT every 12 months as well. Due to this, getting your service and MOT done together would ensure that all work will be completed at the same time. Once the MOT and Service has been completed, you can be certain that your car is safe to drive, your engine to working correctly and every aspect of your vehicle is safe and to the required standard. After your MOT and Full Service, we recommend that at the 6-month interval, an Interim Service is completed. If your oil and filter need changing in-between the Interim Service and the Full Service and MOT, you can book in for an oil &filter change to give you that extra peace of mind.

How long is a car service?

If you are looking for an Interim Service for your car or van, this can take up to 2 hours and 30 minutes. For a Full Service at National Tyres and Autocare, this can take up to 3 hours due to the complexity and amount of work that needs to be undertaken by the branch staff. Please note, however, your local National Tyres and Autocare branch may advise you to leave your vehicle with them. This could be either all morning which is 8:30 am to 1 pm or all afternoon which is 1 pm to 5:30 pm. This additional time is to allow for potential rectification, with regards to other problems that may be found during the service inspection, however, if everything is fine, then you should have your car back within the allocated time which we stated previously. The above times are achievable when the branch has pre-booked a slot, which can be booked online over on our servicing page. These times are also dependent on whether the parts are ready and available. The following article discusses this in more detail: How long is a car service?

Consumables Fee

What is the consumables fee and why and when is it charged?
Whilst completing more complex work on customers’ vehicles, we use a range of consumable items to meet the needs of the job. Examples of such consumable items include protective seat and steering wheel covers, maintenance and penetration sprays, greases and lubricants, top-up fluids, rags, degreasers, and gloves.

The £3 consumables fee, which includes VAT, will only apply on bigger jobs like brake and clutch work, steering and suspension tasks, vehicle servicing and timing belt jobs. The consumables fee is waived if the transaction also includes a tyre and a tyre environmental disposal fee.

I never used to see a charge for consumable items. Why are you charging me separately now for these items?
With prices rising for garage consumables, we’ve now updated the way we break down the total job price to highlight the cost of consumable items to customers, whenever the fee applies.
