Checking your driving licence online can now be done easily through the DVLA website. In this blog, we’ll talk through how you can check and change your driving licence online, as well as answer a few other relative questions.

To check your driving licence information online, visit the DVLA website. Here you can check your driving record, for example, what vehicles you’re qualified to drive. You can also check any penalty points or driving disqualifications.

You can also create a licence check code in order to share your licence details with someone, such as a car hire company.

In order to check your licence details on the website, you will need:

  • Your driving licence number
  • Your national insurance number
  • Your postcode

Updating driving licence: How to update your driving licence

To update your driving licence details online, visit the DVLA website. Here you can change the name on your driving licence and the address on your driving licence. To change your name and address at the same time, you will need to do this by post. More information on how to make these changes by post can be found on the DVLA website.

To make changes to your driving licence, you will need:

  • Your driving licence number
  • Your home address
  • Your national insurance number
  • Your passport number

New driving licence: How to get one

To replace a full or provisional driving licence, you can apply on the DVLA website. Applying for a new driving licence costs £20 and can be paid by card online. You can also apply for a new licence by phone or post.

To apply for a new driving licence, you’ll need to:

  • Be a resident of Great Britain
  • Provide your home address
  • Provide your driving licence number, national insurance number or passport number
  • A new photo (if your passport photo is not suitable)
  • Your email address

How to apply for a provisional licence online

To drive a car whilst learning, you will need a provisional licence. You can apply for a provisional licence online through the DVLA website. To apply for a provisional licence, you need to be at least 15 years and 9 months old.

You must also be able to read a number plate 20 metres away. If you cannot, you must have an eye test and potentially glasses before being allowed to drive.

To apply for a UK licence, you must provide:

  • An identity document, such as a passport
  • Your home address
  • Your national insurance number

Applying for a provisional licence costs £34, and can be paid online using a credit or debit card.

A provisional licence allows you to drive a car, providing that you are with a driving instructor or a driver who has held a full licence for over 3 years. There are certain vehicles that you cannot drive using a provisional licence. The list of those vehicles can be found on the DVLA website.
