Winter Warmth: Car Comfort for Frosty Drives
As the seasonal chill arrives, driving can begin to feel like a chore. Between frosty windscreens and interior dampness, beginning your winter drive often includes delays and discomfort that may make you dread your daily drives.
As most of us spend so much time in our vehicles, it’s important to feel comfortable and safe, which is why we’ve designed the perfect winter car interior tips to make motoring easier.
Humidity control
Prevent dampness and mould in your car this winter with some easy steps that successfully control the internal humidity level.
The first step is to always remove any wet items from your vehicle as you exit. Whether it’s muddy wellington boots, wet sports kits, or your work umbrella, be sure to take them into the house with you, rather than let them dry in your car. Even used coffee cups can introduce excess moisture into your cabin, which leads to condensation and dampness.
To combat moisture in your car’s interior, simple tips such as cracking open a window while parked can work. Cleaning your windows on the inside and outside is another easy way of reducing condensation and damp – microfibre demister pads are ideal for this.
When you turn on your ventilation and air conditioning, use fresh air mode (if possible) rather than recirculation. This draws dry and new air into the vehicle, rather than reusing the same and trapping moisture. Ideally, during cold and wet weather, you should combine using both your car heater and A/C to dry and heat your cabin, rather than warming damp air.
You can go one step further in combating interior dampness by picking up a car dehumidifier on your next trip out. These handy tools are reusable throughout the year and compact, as they work to prevent a build-up of condensation and rust.

Frost
No matter how much of a rush you’re in on an icy morning, you should always avoid throwing hot water over your windscreen. You could injure yourself, or you may even crack your windscreen. Instead, remove the ice regularly with an ice scraper and avoid letting the ice build up to a thick sheet, as this will be harder to remove.
To make early mornings easier, invest in a car cover or windscreen cover, as these prevent ice from sticking to your glass and side mirrors.
Another simple trick to make motoring easier is to park your car facing east. As the sunrise comes up in the east, your windscreen receives a few extra minutes of sunlight, loosening up overnight frost.
Perhaps the most efficient method is using de-icer. Effective down to very cold temperatures, de-icer improves your visibility during extreme conditions by melting ice and preventing re-freezing.
Condensation is made worse if your car’s door and window seals are worn or damaged. Check that the drains in your doors and boot are unblocked to prevent trapped water. A de-icer spray can also be used on your car seals to prevent your doors from freezing shut.
Minimising the overnight frost accumulation is an important step in making winter drives and your daily routine easier.

Comfort
Ensure car comfort, even during the wet-weather season, by investing in some interior car accessories. They keep you warm, safe in an emergency, and they look nice!
Our first recommendation is to grab some car mats. After muddy walks, they make it easier to clean and protect your vehicle’s floor, further minimising damp and related damage. They also provide a non-slip surface for your feet as well as insulating your cabin by acting as a carpet, preventing heat from escaping through the bottom of your car.
Fun accessories like air fresheners can be useful if your car does suffer from dampness, and seat covers are great at providing additional comfort and insulation throughout your regular drives. You may even consider upgrading your in-car audio system – just in time for the return of Christmas songs on the radio!
A top tip to ensure car comfort is to create your own emergency kit. If you ever break down, you’ll avoid wanting to use your heater to save your battery. That means that waiting by the side of the road in the dark and cold can feel very unpleasant. Organise an emergency box with equipment like a blanket, torch, snacks, and even heated accessories like disposable hand warmers.
