What is screen wash?

The main function of screen wash is to improve your visibility when driving, helping remove any grime or dirt from off your windsreen. Ensuring that your screen wash is never empty helps extend the lifespan of your wiper blades, too! Using screen wash will help your wiper blades glide smoothly and help effectively move any debris. It is a good idea to always keep a bottle of screen wash in the boot of your vehicle.

Can no screen wash lead to an MOT failure?

Yes. You can fail your MOT if your visibility is impaired to the point that you do not have a clear view of the road. This is why it is vitally important that you check the condition of your wipers and whether your screen wash needs topping up on a regular basis.

At National, we understand that it can be daunting before your car is due its MOT. To help you prepare, we have created a pre-MOT Checklist to give you all of the best hints and tips to make sure your vehicle passes its MOT. To access the article, please click on the button below.

Where to buy screen wash

There are a number of places online where you can buy screen wash such as Halfords. Please be aware that some screen wash bottles come ready-mixed (pre mixed), meaning you can add this straight from the bottle into your windscreen washer fluid reservoir washer bottle. Other types of screen wash will need water adding.

How to top up screen wash

  • Open up your car bonnet
  • Locate the windscreen washer fluid reservoir (also known as screen wash bottle) and remove the cap. This will most commonly have a blue cap and have an image of a windscreen and water droplets. To be 100% certain, please refer to your vehicle handbook as some people confuse this with the AdBlue filter tank (if your vehicle has one).
  • Add the screen wash until it reaches the maximum line- this may be easier if you have a funnel.
  • Place cap back on the reservoir to seal

Are windscreen washer fluid and screen wash the same thing?

Yes. You may hear it called either screen wash or windscreen washer fluid. Most commonly in the UK, it is called screen wash.
