How to change your cabin air filter

Learn how to change your cabin filter with this simple step-by-step guide to improve air quality, remove odours, and keep your car ventilation working well.

If you struggle with allergies or sensitivities, you may already be aware of the importance of your cabin air filter.  Designed to improve the air quality inside your vehicle, without replacing it as needed, you may soon start to notice a decline in your cabin comfort.

What is a cabin air filter?

A cabin air filter traps pollutants and contaminants like dust, pollen, and mold to improve the air quality and overall comfort in your cabin. If your filter is clogged or old, it can make your air conditioning work harder, decreasing its efficiency during the stuffier months.

The benefits of a cabin air filter also include:

- Improved health of passengers, particularly if you suffer with asthma or respiratory issues.
- Enhanced fuel efficiency and vehicle performance as your HVAC system operates smoothly.
- Improved odour reduction.

How often should I replace my cabin filter?

Typically, your cabin filter should be changed every 12,000 – 15,000 miles, or around once a year. You should consult your owner’s manual for specifics around your vehicle’s make and model.

Factors that reduce filter lifespan:

-  Dusty, polluted or high-traffic places like urban cities, can clog your filter quicker.
- Allergy concerns: if you suffer particularly with allergies, you may wish to change your filter more frequently to reduce your exposure to allergens.
- Off-road driving can introduce more debris to your filter and shorten its lifespan.
- Spring and summer bring higher pollen levels, which may require more frequent changes.

Signs your air filter needs a replacement

There are warning signs that your cabin air filter needs to be replaced, including:

- Musty or foul odours can occur if moisture becomes trapped in your clogged filter, leading to the growth of mold or mildew.
- Whistling or whining noises, which can occur when air is being forced through your struggling filter.
- Growling or ticking sounds that can start if debris is lodged within the blower motor.
- Reduced air flow or less efficient air conditioning system.
- Failing defroster function or reduced windscreen visibility.
- Heightened symptoms of allergies or asthma as dust and pollen gathers in your cabin.

How to change your cabin filter

To change your vehicle’s pollen filter, you’ll require... a pollen filter! Or cabin filter, or air filter – whatever you call it, a replacement is essential. You’ll also require a screwdriver, socket set, disposable gloves, and a face mask if you suffer from allergies.

Buy cabin filters

1. Find your cabin filter
Although the exact location can vary, your air filter is typically found behind your glovebox, centre console, or under your bonnet. You can check your owner’s manual to find where yours should be.

2. Remove the old filter
Likely using your screwdrivers, remove any panels or covers to access your filter housing. Detach anything securing it, like plastic clips, and gently remove the old filter. It can be a good idea to take a photo of the original positioning to refer back to later.

3. Clean the filter housing
Take a couple of minutes to clean and remove any debris from around or in the filter housing. Using a vacuum or small brush to remove any loose grime, clean the interior with a slightly damp microfibre cloth.

4. Install the new filter
Slide your new cabin filter into place, reconnecting any clips or covers that hold it secure. Now’s a good time to check your image to spot any installation errors.

5. Test your A/C
Finally, you can turn on your air con system and use different settings to assess whether the airflow feels right. If so, you’ve successfully changed your cabin filter at home!
