Car Insurance Check

As well as making sure that you check MOT and Tax, it is important that you also make sure that your car insurance is valid and up-to-date. You will be unable to drive your car legally if you do not have valid car insurance.

You can purchase car insurance online through a number of handy insurance comparison websites such as Go Compare and Compare The Market. Once you have purchased your car insurance, you will be able to check the insurance due date on the respective insurer's website. If you are involved in an accident with an uninsured driver, you need to contact the Motor Insurance Bureau (MIB).

MOT certificates are valid for one year- however, with car tax and insurance, you can purchase these for shorter amounts of time. For car tax, you can pay for this on the Gov.UK website via direct debit for a period of 1 month, 6 months or 1 year. For car insurance, you can purchase this for any time up to a year. For example, Aviva offers temporary short term car insurance.

To summarise, it's important you know your renewal dates and you check the tax, MOT and insurance of your vehicle to ensure your car is road-legal. If you are looking to purchase a used vehicle, purchasing a car with a valid MOT would be a sensible move. Purchasing a used car with a valid MOT certificate will decrease the risk of the vehicle having any issues. For example, if you purchase a car that has 11 months left on its MOT Certificate, knowing that the vehicle passed an MOT check a month before, should help give you that extra peace of mind.
