It is illegal to drive a vehicle without valid insurance. That's why it's essential to make sure your vehicle is correctly listed on the Motor Insurance Database (MID). If your vehicle does not appear on the MID and you continue to drive it, you could face prosecution. This guide explains what AskMID is, how to check your insurance status, and what to do if your details are missing.

What is AskMID?

AskMID is the official online service that allows you to check whether your vehicle is recorded on the Motor Insurance Database. This is used by:

- Police and DVLA, through Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), to identify uninsured vehicles. 

- Drivers, who can use AskMID to confirm that their own insurance is active and correctly registered. 

AskMID is free to use for checking your own vehicle.

How to check the Motor Insurance Database (MID)

You can complete an MID check in four simple steps:

1. Visit AskMID.
2. Enter your vehicle registration.
3. Read and accept the data protection declaration.
4. Click 'Check your vehicle'.

This will successfully confirm whether your vehicle is currently listed as insured or not. 

My insurance isn't showing on AskMID

If your insurance does not appear on AskMID, there are two common reasons:

- Recent policy purchase: new insurance can take a short time to update on the database.

- Missing or incorrect data: your insurer may not have uploaded your details yet.

If your vehicle still isn't showing, contact your insurer and ask them to update the Motor Insurance Database. 

My car isn't recognised on AskMID

If AskMID cannot find your vehicle:

- Double-check that you entered the correct registration number. 

- Try the search again.

A simple typing error is one of the most common causes for being unable to find your vehicle. Double check your registration, and try it again.

Insuring a SORN vehicle

Under continuous insurance enforcement, every vehicle must be insured unless it had been declared SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification). If a vehicle is uninsured and not SORN, the registered keeper will be contacted. 

A SORN vehicle does not require:

- Car tax.

- Insurance.

- An MOT.

Checking someone else's insurance on AskMID

If you have unfortunately been involved in a road accident, you can use the AskMID Third-Party Enquiry service to check whether the other vehicle is insured. The other driver will not be notified.

A small fee does apply, and you must provide details of the incident.

Can you check MOT status on AskMID?

No - AskMID only shows insurance information. For MOT details, you can use:

Can you check car tax on AskMID?

No -you cannot check car tax on AskMID. AskMID is the Motor Insurance Database. To check tax status, use the official government car tax service.
