It is illegal to drive a vehicle without valid insurance and that is why it is vitally important to check that your vehicle's details are registered in the Motor Insurance Database. Within this article, we will be telling you how to check the Motor Insurance Database. If your vehicle details are not displayed in the Motor Insurance Database and you continue to drive your vehicle, you could face prosecution.

What is AskMID?

AskMID is a free to use website where you can check whether your vehicle is displayed within the Motor Insurance Database. ANPR, which stands for Automatic Number Plate Recognition, uses AskMID to ensure that all cars on UK roads are insured- this is used by the police and the DVLA. As well as the police and the DVLA, you can use AskMID yourself to check whether your car insurance is valid.

MID Check

On the Motor Insurance Database, you can check whether your vehicle is on AskMID in 4 very simple and easy steps.

  1. Head to https://ownvehicle.askmid.com/;
  2. Enter your vehicle registration
  3. Read the data protection declaration
  4. Click 'Check this vehicle'

My insurance isn't showing on AskMID

If you have recently purchased new car insurance, there may be a slight crossover which may mean your vehicle isn't showing up on the AskMID website. However, if this is the case, it would be a good idea to get in touch with your car insurance provider and ask them to send your details to the Motor Insurance Database.

If your vehicle is not recognised using the vehicle registration lookup, you may have entered your vehicle registration correctly. Please double check your vehicle registration and try again.

Insuring an off-road (SORN) vehicle

Due to the continuous insurance enforcement, you must have your vehicle insured unless you have declared your vehicle for SORN. For any vehicle that is not in the Motor insurance Database and does not have insurance, the registered owner will be contacted. If you SORN your vehicle, you do not need car tax, insurance or an MOT.

Checking someone else's insurance on AskMID

If you have unfortunately been involved in a car accident with another vehicle, you can also check if somebody else's vehicle is insured- the other vehicle will not be made aware of this enquiry. Head over to AskMID Enquiry, and fill out the required details related to the accident. There is also a small fee involved to run this request.

Checking MOT on AskMID

You cannot check your MOT status using AskMID, only whether your car insurance is valid. At National, we offer a free MOT Date Checker which can be easily accessed on our website- this will tell you when your MOT is due. We also offer an MOT Reminder Service which will notify you before your MOT due date. If you sign up for our MOT Reminder Service, you will receive your MOT at a discounted rate of £35 at your local National Tyres MOT testing station.

Check car tax on AskMID

You cannot check car tax on AskMID. AskMID is the Motor Insurance Database. However, you can check car tax on the government website. If you would like more information on how to check car tax, please click on the link below.

Where to find cheap car insurance

There are a number of car insurance comparison websites such as Go Compare and Compare The Market, which will help find you the best car insurance quotations. However, it is important to note that some car insurance companies are not on comparison sites such as Direct Line Car Insurance so it may be worth shopping around for the best deal.
