There are a number of different components that can cause steering issues and a number of different signs that can give you an indication that something may not be right.

Difficulty steering the wheel

You will know how much resistance your steering wheel will normally take when turning it. If you feel like it is getting more difficult and strenuous to steer the wheel, this can be a sign that there are some underlying steering issues.

Most modern cars have a power steering feature that’s sole purpose is to make steering effortless. Finding difficulty steering the wheel is most likely due to the power steering failing. The most common reason for this that there is not enough power steering fluid. You can check this by checking the fluid reservoir. If you fill this up and the levels drop, it can indicate a fluid leak. You can also identify a leak by checking under the car for any signs of leakage.

Steering wheel vibrations

Your steering wheel vibrating is another indicator that there is an issue with your steering.  You will spot this issue when driving and you will feel the steering wheel excessively vibrating or pulsating, especially when turning the wheel. 

This can be another suggestion that there is a problem with your power steering. However, a vibrating steering wheel can also suggest other problems with your car, such as -

Slipping steering wheel

A slipping steering wheel is another common symptom of steering problems. This is when your steering wheel will pull to the right or left when driving straight. This can be a major issue that can cause accidents. 

This sign can be another indication of power steering failure, a worn steering rack, or a loose steering belt.

Grinding or screeching noise when steering

You will experience this noise when turning a corner. The noise will be in correlation with the turn of the steering wheel. There are other squeaking noises that you may experience when driving which you may experience that can be mistaken for this noise. A common noise that you may hear is squeaking coming from the brakes.

This could noise could also suggest a loose or worn steering power belt. The purpose of this belt is to connect the power steering pump to the engine. As a result of this, you may also experience power steering failure.

Discoloured liquid coming from the car

If you notice a puddle of liquid coming from your car, it can suggest a problem with the steering, amongst other things. There is a possibility that this liquid could power steering fluid. This can be further confirmed if the liquid looks foamy.

Foamy or discoloured power steering fluid is a sign that water or air has managed to get into the system.
