By law, tread depth must be above 1mm in a continuous band across the central three-quarters of the tread
width of the tyre and throughout the whole of its circumference (for all motorcycles above 50cc). However, we would recommend that tyres be
replaced at a minimum of 2mm for optimum safety and performance in wet and poor road conditions.
For motorcycles up to 50cc (or travel at speeds of up to 30mph) the law requires that all the grooves of the original tread pattern must be clearly visible.
All tyres fitted must be suitable for purpose (matching speed index and load index capabilities).
It is mandatory that tyres be kept in good condition without lumps, bulges or tears.
If a tyre has a cut that is deep enough to reach the cord or ply and is more than 25mm or 10% of its
width (whichever is the greater), then that tyre is considered illegal.
It is also the case that if any cut, however small, exposes the cord of a tyre, then the tyre is illegal.
Tyre pressure must be maintained to recommended levels as detailed in the manufacturer’s hand book.
Failure to meet the above criteria can result in up to a £2500 fine and 3 penalty points PER TYRE!
There are also specific rules on tyre mixing contained within The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986.
